What is a First Look?
First, let’s talk about what a “first look” is…a first look is when a couple chooses to break the more traditional route of not seeing each other until the ceremony begins. The time happens sometime before the walk down the aisle. This can be a few moments before or even hours before. It typically happens in a quiet space and only involves the bride and groom. The practice of a first look is becoming more and more common in the modern day wedding. But, the choice to do one is strictly up to the couple!
The Pros of a First Look
· A First Look can help calm the nerves in a private setting. Many brides and grooms experience “cold feet” right before walking down the aisle. A First Look allows those nerves to be expressed without an audience and can be very reassuring for the couple.
· A First Look can allow for a private moment together on your most special day. You will spend very little of this day alone as a couple. The First Look will give you that much needed time without feeling like you need to rush back to your guests and reception. By having the First Look BEFORE the ceremony, there is no one “waiting” on you.
· A First Look can help with remaining on schedule because many of the shots of the bride and groom together can happen before the ceremony. This means that you will arrive to your reception at a quicker rate allowing you more time to party with your guests!
· A First Look can give you better pictures, especially in the winter. The sun sets so early that a First Look means the picture timeline is moved up allowing for a more natural light.
The Cons of a First Look
· There is nothing quite like the look of a groom when he first sees his bride. While this moment still occurs with a First Look, the special people who are there to support you miss that moment and the raw emotion that follows.
· The First Look pushes the timeline of getting ready for your big day earlier. This may mean that you are starting your day as an early riser and not getting the rest you need to enjoy to the fullest.
· Tradition! A First Look is very different from the traditional wedding and some people are suckers for tradition.
· Because you are nervous the First Look can be somewhat awkward, with neither the bride nor the groom knowing how to respond or act. With the traditional method you have the ceremony time to settle nerves before having your “moments” together.
No matter which direction you choose for your special day, make sure that you are doing what you feel is the right answer for you as the bride and groom and not others around you. After all, your day should be exactly that, your day!
